Infant/Toddler Classes

The aquatics program at the New Rochelle Y has been teaching swimming for decades and we're proud to offer a range of classes for swimmers of all ages and abilities. Our instructors focus on teaching the basic techniques of swimming, sharpening and improving those skills for a possible future on the swim team as well as specialized skills such as life guarding and CPR.

Group lessons typically operate on 8 week cycles and can range in class sizes of 3 to 10 students. If a swimmer has some experience in the water, we typically ask that they take a swim evaluation with one of our instructors before placement into a class. Otherwise new swimmers can sign up for lessons at our front desk or through our online registration page. We also offer private and semi-private lessons for students who are looking for a more flexible schedule or who would like more personal instruction.

Swimming Lessons for Babies (Ages 6 months to 3 years)

For children ages 6 months to 3 years old, we operate in a "mommy/daddy-and-me" format. In this class parents are in the water with their children while the instructor leads the class. This course helps to introduce children to the water and to overcome any fears that the child might have from being in the water. Exercises include entering/exiting the pool, floating and an introduction to arm/leg actions in the water. Parents are also taught water safety skills including techniques and strategies to use around the pool and beach. Infant/toddler swimming lessons are considered to be beginner classes and do not require an evaluation to enroll. Please note that a parent or guardian is required to be in the water with the child in this class.

Swimming Lessons for Children (Ages 3 to 12)

For children ages 3 to 12, children are in the water without assistance from parents. These classes start at Pike or Polliwog, which is a basic introduction to the water and swimming skills to Shark or Starfish which starts to get into competitive swimming techniques. While we do not require beginner swimmers to enroll in Pike or Polliwog classes, we do require an evaluation for students registering for higher levels. If you would like to schedule a swim evaluation for your child please contact us at 914.632.1818. Otherwise, you can register for beginner courses on our online registration page.

Private Swim Instruction

Private swimming lessons are a great alternative for students who either need a bit more practice or cannot commit to a regular schedule. Our swimming instructors work with swimmers of all ages and levels, whether you're just a beginner or looking to improve your competitive edge. Private swim instruction also makes for a great supplement to group instruction, allowing you to refine specific strokes or techniques that could use additional attention.

Private Lessons

All private lessons run for 1/2 hour each in a one-on-one setting, one student and one teacher. Lessons are scheduled between the instructor and the student and payment is only made after the instructor and student are able to decide on a date or days to meet.

Semi-Private Lessons

Much like private lessons, all semi-private lessons run for an 1/2 each with an instructor assigned specifically to each pair. Students who are taking semi-private swim instruction should be of similar age and in swimming level. Semi-private lessons are a great choice for for siblings or a couple looking to learn how to swim together.
