Job Description

Under the direction of the Senior Program Director, the Swim Coach manages the swim team in accordance with the rules and regulations set forth by the YMCA of the USA.  Provide direct leadership, instruction and motivation for swim team participants between the ages 6-18 years old. Attend all swim meet and team functions throughout the year as well as being responsible for creating and maintaining a safe environment for the participants.


  1. 2+ years experience as a competitive swimmer.
  2. 2+ years coach experience preferred.
  3. Principles of YMCA competitive Swimming certification (Must be completed within 90 days of hire).
  4. Must be able to demonstrate proficiency of swim skills in accordance with YMCA standards and have a strong foundation in stroke mechanics and be able to communicate effectively with swimmers and their parents.
  5. Enthusiastic, dynamic presence with good communication skill.
  6. Certification: CPR/AED and First-Aid or willingness to obtain
  7. At least 21 years of age.

Essential Functions

  1. Create thorough, age-appropriate workouts focusing on technique, endurance, stroke development, drills, etc.
  2. Lead structured practices throughout all of the swimming seasons.
  3. Track daily attendance.
  4. Handle all administrative matters relating to the team, swim meet arrangements and team performance as well as interaction with parents.
  5. Coordinate and execute swim teams competitions and meet registrations.
  6. Record times at swim meets.
  7. Responsible for setting up swim meets and working with parent committee in securing volunteers to run meets.
  8. Ensure that there are sufficient supplies and equipment to conduct swim meets.
  9. Attends all staff meetings and training as required.
  10. Other duties as assigned.


Requires Certifications

Principles of YMCA competitive Swim Certification (Must completed within 90 days of hire).

CPR/AED and First-Aid or willingness to obtain.

Group Exercise Instructor (water and land) with experience teaching exercise to adults.

Prefer  fitness certification from ACE, AFFA or YMCA. Must have valid/current CPR certification. Experienced, motivating and energetic instructors only. $30 per hour.

Shift needed: Early AM weekday (9-10AM) and weekends, weeknight (8-9pm) as well as subbing opportunities. Must provide 3 employment references and a criminal background check.



The YMCA is seeking lifeguards for mid week, evening and weekend shifts. The lifeguard is responsible for ensuring every swimmer' safety in the pool. Lifeguard must be a good swimmer, have high sense of responsibility, be alert and conscientious.

  • Be Responsible for the guarding and safety of members and program participants within all aquatic facilities.
  • Be responsible for the pool until relieved by another guard.
  • Quick action to any potential emergency situation.
  • Use appropriate emergency procedures, and provide appropriate care to swimmers.
  • Attend National YMCA certification trainings, regular in-service trainings and other trainings and meetings as they are held.
  • Abide by the YMCA Aquatics Safety Code of Conduct.
  • Learn the names of members and greet them when they arrive at the pool


YMCA Lifeguard Qualifications and Skills

  • The minimum age to work as a YMCA lifeguard is 18.
  • A recognized Lifeguard certification, CPR for Professional Rescuer (including AED) of YMCA, Red Cross, or others.
  • Administration on Oxygen.

Aquatics Instructors 

YMCA seeks an experienced and certified swim instructors for beginner through advanced levels who has worked with all ages.  Please complete online application along with a copy of your certifications and sent to

Afterschool Counselor: Staff are needed to lead activities, assist with homework, play group games, gym games and interact with children ages 5-12 years old. Must be energetic and be an excellent role model.

  • HS graduate
  • 6 months experience working in children ages 5-12 years
  • One year college preferred
  • Hours 3:00-6:00 school days (and 11:30-3:00pm ½ days)
  • Must have 3 employment references and criminal background check
  • First aid and CPR certification preferred.

Starting pay $11 per hour/15 hours a week on average

The YMCA is seeking individuals who will ensure facility areas are in clean and orderly condition.


  • Keep facilities in clean and orderly condition performing any combination of the following duties: sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, and vacuuming hallways, stairs, and open spaces; laundry duties; strip and wax as needed.
  • Inspect assigned rooms and restrooms on a daily basis and clean up as required.
  • Request supplies/materials as needed.
  • Cooperate with building supervisor and other staff.
  • Review cleaning schedule; follow through on daily projects as identified by supervisor.
  • Inform supervisor of all cleaning and facility needs, including problems and concerns affecting total operation.
  • Follow standards of Department of Health, ACS/ASD, ACA, Occupational Safety & Health Administration, NY Fire Department and YMCA.
  • Actively participate in all training sessions, designated meetings and special events.


  • 3 years of experience in related field; two years of experience in maintenance and/or housekeeping duties.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Knowledge of materials, chemicals, cleaning fluids and their uses, everyday cleaning schedules and building maintenance.

Group Exercise Instructors

  • Provide a high degree of member service through a professional relationship with the members in regards to their needs, concerns, and questions about the YMCA, its programs and mission
  • Good cueing skills and creative choreography; demonstrate choreography and exercises to participants.
  • Ability to relate to and work with people of diverse backgrounds.
  • Responsible for participant safety – inspect gym floor, equipment and supplies; notify supervisor of equipment in need of repair.
  • Educate members on current health and fitness issues and trends.
  • Modify classes and routines according to fitness levels in class.
  • Knowledge of anatomy and physiology and their relationship to the development of group exercise classes.
  • Work cooperatively and professionally with other staff and departments.
  • Maintain required personal certifications.
  • Actively participate in all staff meetings and trainings related to the position.

Youth Sports Instructors

The YMCA is seeking energetic and qualified individuals who will assist in the successful operation of their Youth Sports Program. Youth Sports Instructors will conduct safe, fun, and effective youth sports programs, based on the YMCA of Greater New York Healthy Lifestyles
Standards and Guidelines.


  • Ensure the health, safety and well being of children in a sports program by providing close supervision of all activities
  • Introduce children to the basic fundamental concepts of different games - basketball, baseball, soccer, track and field, general fitness/sports
  • Assist lead instructor with youth sport activities
  • Prepare class format for each youth sports session
  • Provide sports instruction, i.e., perform drills and demos pertaining to different sports
  • Evaluate equipment and ensure safety of participants

  • High school diploma; BA in Physical Education is preferred
