When you give to the Y, you make a meaningful difference in community.
New Rochelle YMCA Sailfish Swim Team
The Sailfish Swim Team is an inclusive, age-group program for swimmers 8 to 18 years old, with a Pre Team for ages 5 to 7. It’s a year-round, co-ed team, practicing and competing out of the New Rochelle YMCA at 50 Weyman Avenue. The Sailfish belong to the local Metropolitan Swimming committee of USA Swimming, and also follow the meets and time standards of YMCA Swimming.
Launching on the heels of a major pool renovation, the Sailfish Swim Team is a new program with a focus on swimming fundamentals and a healthy lifestyle. Sailfish coaches are trained to nurture within a competitive environment, where participants grow as individuals, experience team spirit, and learn the importance of giving back to the community.
The life lessons of competitive swimming on a YMCA team are many. Swimmers are expected to be responsible, honest, safe, caring, and respectful – in swimming, at home and at school. Y coaches care about swimmers in all aspects of life, and want to see them reach their full potential. YMCA swimmers will learn to set goals, and to push and challenge themselves, building self-confidence, fitness and strength along the way. Equally important, they will have an opportunity to make friends and feel part of something bigger than themselves.
The Sailfish Swim Team encourages a minimum commitment of three practices per week, with practice times Monday through Friday in the early evening, as well as Saturday and Sunday mornings. When enrollment is finalized for the 2016-17 season, specific practice days and times will be identified for each swimmer from those listed above.
Open tryouts for the 2016-17 season will be held on the following days/times: Monday 9/12 – Friday 9/16, 6:30–7:45 p.m. Successful completion of YMCA Porpoise Club or Shark swim class is recommended but not mandatory.
